Fox 13 News
I decided to do research on Fox 13 News because I am from Salt Lake City so I was raised off of Fox 13. KSTU is located in Salt Lake City right next to the Salt Lake Airport; which first opened up on October 9th, 1979. While I was doing my research on KSTU I found out that it was the first independent station to open up in Utah at its time. Before it was channel 13 it started off on dial 20. The news would follow the top shows at the time Star Trek: The Next Generation and Cheers.
KSTU had the opportunity to switch from dial 20 to dial 13 in 1989, which was the last available channel at the time, giving it the campaign name “Lucky 13”.  When KSTU made the switch from dial 20 to 13 the news started to follow more popular shows such as 21 Jump Street, Married with Children and even The Simpsons. KSTU is the only SLC station in the valley to remain associated with the same TV network since 1989. On New Years Eve of 1989-90 Fox 13 launched their very first half an hour broadcast at 9 P-M, which then became one of their biggest moves that they made at the time. It was such a big hit that they even gave them an extra half hour giving Fox 13 a full hour of News at 9.
“In December 2013, KSTU joined Tribune Company and became part of the largest combined independent broadcast group in the United States.” (History of KSTU , 2017)
Fox 13 has 7 different times that comes on through out the day that is strictly news and sports. With only being 7 different times the news is on there are 30 different anchors that report the news. I tried to figure out what type of equipment they use, but I had very little luck.
From what I found I saw that they have a big grid that they can hang lights and different objects such as arms from c stands. They also have a control room that gives them access to all of the cameras and audio and even the teleprompter to help the anchor deliver the best news possible. Whenever there is breaking news most of the time its just a camera guy and the anchor that make what is called a “package” which they film what happened on location giving: B-Roll footage, Voice Overs, Sounds on Tape (which are interviews), Stand In and also a Outro. These items that they put in the package are not in any particular order, except the outro that comes at the end and the stand in which happens in the begging. After the cameraman and anchor get their shots they just edit it real fast in the van or back at the newsroom and then play it.
I interviewed one of my good friends D.J. Boler jack, who works for a different news station said,” My cameraman does not have any special camera, he just uses a regular Canon DSLR”.  (Bolerjack, 2017 )
D.J. was also telling me that as times are changing he doesn’t really even need a cameraman if he really wanted to he could just set up his own shots and get b-roll on hos own.
